About Yin Yoga & Sound

Unlike more dynamic styles of yoga that build strength through continuous movement, Yin Yoga encourages us to settle into gentle, floor-based postures and remain there for around three to five minutes. Rather than working primarily with the muscles, these longer holds allow the body to reach deeper layers of connective tissue, including the fascia, ligaments, tendons, and joints, supporting mobility, flexibility, and the release of tension.

Yet Yin Yoga is about so much more than physical flexibility. The stillness of the practice creates space to turn inward, becoming aware of the breath, the sensations within the body, and the gentle rhythm of the present moment.

Rooted in the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Yin Yoga works with the body's energetic pathways, known as meridians, which are believed to carry the body's vital life force energy, or Qi. Each Yin posture gently stimulates specific meridian lines through sustained, gentle pressure, re-energising the deeper connective tissues and their energetic pathways. This quiet, meditative approach invites the nervous system to settle, while sound adds another layer, helping to soothe the body and mind. It creates space for rest, restoration, and deep listening, recalibrating us through its vibrations as the sound travels through both the physical and non-physical bodies.

I offer sound throughout the class and while the postures are held to support the journey inward. You may hear the soothing tones of singing bowls, chimes, flute, shruti box, and my own voice, alongside other instruments such as the harp, violin, or piano. Each sound is offered intuitively, creating an immersive soundscape that invites the body and mind into deeper states of rest, presence, and receptivity.

For those who wish to explore an even deeper experience, I also offer, during selected postures, the opportunity to have a singing bowl gently placed on the body. As the bowl is played, its vibrations travel directly through the physical body, reaching deeper layers of tissue while offering a profoundly grounding and restorative experience.
